MichelleObamaGovernersBall2010

On Sunday afternoon Michelle Obama gave a group of Washington-area music students a preview of the talent set to perform at the Governor’s Ball.

We think Michelle Obama looked spectacular.   Her outfit iss stylish, classy, and flattering.   She wore a high waist skirt above-the-knee pencil skirt, deep plunge silk v-neck blouse, cropped sleeves black cardigan, studded belt by Azelina Alyaia, and round-toe patent leather pumps.

This look is sophisticated and versatile.   Wear it to drum up your classy meets chic fashionista status at the office or to impress at a celebratory dinner.

1.Gilt just can’t stop upping their exclusiveness factor for online designer shopping.   In case their ongoing, invitation only, upscale designer sample sales were not enough, they just launched Noir – an exclusive invitation only event that allows elite members to preview Gilt sales 15 minutes earlier.   The catch? You must spend 10,000K per year to get an invite.

Gwyneth Paltrow is rumored to be a Noir member.

One question comes to mind, if one spends 10K a year shopping Gilt, is one so price sensitive that they must shop Gilt?   And Gwen, we love you, but don’t you have enough designer duds, not to compete with coveting public for designer goodies?[W Mag]

Although a rare few will qualify for Noir membership, don’t let is stop you from checking out Gilt and its competitor’s daily sample sales.

2. Sarah Jessica Parker is rumored to become creative director for Halston. While we bow to her ultimate fashionsta status, we were not aware that she has the required qualifications to become creative director for the iconic fashion house. [TheCut]

Initially this is a non-paid position.  For contributors who are in college, evaluations for school credit will be provided. Excellent writers will be offered paid positions after a set time period.

oprahcjjeansWhen Oprah recommends a product, it piques our curiosity since she has access to cream de la cream of products.

That is why we had to take a look at CJ by Cookie Johnson jeans when Oprah raved about them.    The gist: Cookie Johnson, Magic Johnson’s wife, created a line of upscale denim to fit curvy figures.

cookie-johnson
She came up with the idea for the line because she couldn’t find the jeans that fit her body and noticed that few jean brands were not cut for larger figures.   Cookie wears size 8.   She exercises and religiously follows nutritious and healthy diet. She went from being devastated at the thought that there was something wrong with her body , to realizing that there was a niche in the jeans market that wasn’t being met.   To create an optimal line, she joined forces with 7 For All Mankind founder Michael Glasser (he is also the founder of Citizen of Humanity Denim), when she designed CJ jeans.

The result? High-end denim line, that caters to a different body type.  Per designer:
“These jeans are meant for a mother, a daughter, a grandmother. She has curves, and she has style.”
CJbyCookieJohnsonJeansFashion Verdict: We are impressed with these stylish jeans that are well and thoughtfully cut for women who have curves.   We especially like them since they solve the fashion dilemma: finding jeans that fit curves, that so many of you have mentioned during our recent poll.

To make the jeans fit curvier buttocks, the designer brought the back up slightly higher than most premium denim.  The waist sits a tad up, so it is not showing everything.   The jeans are cut to allow extra room in the thighs.

The jeans come in a great number of styles: skinny jeans, bootcut, high waist, boyfriend and straight leg.   Bootcut and high waist are some of the most popular styles (and the discount offered on the first pair makes them so much more affordable). We love the variety of light to dark denim washes.  Sizes run from 24 to 38 (most denim brands go up to size 18).  The line retails at NORDSTROM and ranges from $117 to $198.

In a words of a customer: “These Jeans are made for Real Women with Real Bodies”.

Our favorite cuts & washes are (grouped by cut):
Bootcut:
1.Grace Bootcut-$63(60% off from$158) 2.Grace Bootcut in Black Rinse-$161

Straight Leg:

1.Faith Straight Leg Stretch Jeans in Cosmos Blue
-$117 2.Faith Straight Leg Stretch Jeans in Dark Rinse -$141

Skinny:
1.Joy Legging Style Jeans in Black Rinse-$145 2.Joy Legging Style Jeans in Dark Rinse-$145

Boyfriend:

1.Love Boyfriend Jeans in Twilight-$196 2.Love Boyfriend Jeans in Grey Vintage-$198

High Waist:

1.Truth High Waist Jeans in Rinse
-$198

For an optimal fit pair these swanky jeans with a sculpting shapewear.

Par2820300We saw them during Alexander McQueen Runway and yes, they were extreme, but that is what we love about Alexander McQueen theatrical runway shows.   However, a few brave humans will tackle bringing these “extreme” platforms to life.

Leave it to Daphne Guinness to challenge that assumption.   She graced Nars 15 years anniversary party in these King-Kong sized platforms and stood proud.AMDaphne_Guinness

What do you think of these?  Would you dare to wear them?  Daily? For a special occasion?

For less extreme, reasonably priced, certainly more wearable on a daily basis, check out these stylish finds:

Jimmy Choo is designing a line for H&M which will consist of shoes, bags, accessories both for Men and Women, plus a clothing line.

The line will be unveiled on November 14th 2009.  So mark your calendars and set your reminders to stop by your nearby H&M store.

Jimmy Choo’s upscale line retails from high $400 to $1,000 +.   The collaboration for H&M will feature shoes starting from $60.

H&M has done some wonderful designer collaborations before with Karl Lagerfield, Stella McCartny, and Matthew Williamson.   The whole movemenent of  “designer apparel and accessories for the masses” is wonderful, fun, and gives those of us who normally can’t or won’t spend high dollar on a designer clothing to taste the flavor of a luxury market.

It is also a great way for the upscale designers to raise brand awareness and make itself slightly more approachable in a consumer’s mind.

So get in gear and get ready to hunt some Jimmy Choos.

the-outnet
theOutnet.com is an online outlet store for net-a-porter.   Leftover apparel, handbags, and shoes from net-a-porter sales is featured at theOutnet, but with a lower price tag.

In addition to regular sale selection, theOutnet also a few other creative shopping alternatives, to keep things interesting.   There are: Flash Sales and Going, Going, Gone Sales.

Flash sales are similar to online sample sales such as Gilt, HauteLook, and RueLaLa.  These sales feature a specific designer and run for a fixed time: usually 24 to 36 hours.

Going, going, gone sales are a little more creative, in a nutshell it is a backward auction.  One item (or a few of the same kind of items) is featured at a high starting price.  The price decreases every second until someone to grabs the item into their cart and checks out.  At this point, if additional items are available the price continues to go down until the next person is ready to pay the displayed price.   If  this is the last item available the Going, going , gone sale ends.

So far “Going sales” featured high end purses: Bottega Veneta and Chloe.  Unfortunately, I didn’t catch the end price for these.

Depending on how many eyeballs are pinpointed to the site during the sale and the interest in the item will determine the price, which is true to the nature of an auction.   The more people are interested in the item, the higher will be the price.

theOutnet.com is a fun site, with eye pleasing design, great features and great upscale pieces at lower prices.  The best part about it in my opinion is that the items are recent and not  from 3 seasons ago.

What do you think of the selection and the prices? I’d love to hear your opinion.  Post in the comments section.

Gwyneth Paltrow has gotten on the “celebrity actress turned fashion designer” bandwagon.  She teamed up with French retailer ZOEtee’s and created “ZOEtee’s Loves Gwyneth” fashion line.  The collection is for Fall/Winter 09 season and will be debuted in London Fashion Show next week.

According to Elle.com, the line is expected to be a “luxe, sophisticated yet very wearable collection of instant hits”.  The line is also described as consisting of “jersey basics as well as some glam, 1970s inspired looks and pieces influenced by masculine tailoring.”

I love Gwyneth Paltrow as an actress and consider her to be an artist.  She is intelligent, talented, has depth, and overall always seems more classy than some of her colleagues.   So it would be nice, if unlike the rest of the popular actresses turned designers, Gwyn chose a unique path of staying loyal to her one passion: acting.

Having said that, there is something about this news that remains classy: all the profits from the collection will go to Gwyneth favorite charity: London’s Kid’s Company, one of Paltrow’s favourite charities.  Go Gwyneth!
