We think Michelle Obama looked spectacular.   Her outfit iss stylish, classy, and flattering.   She wore a high waist skirt above-the-knee pencil skirt, deep plunge silk v-neck blouse, cropped sleeves black cardigan, studded belt by Azelina Alyaia, and round-toe patent leather pumps.

This look is sophisticated and versatile.   Wear it to drum up your classy meets chic fashionista status at the office or to impress at a celebratory dinner.

How Often Should You Wash Your Hair?

by fh on January 21, 2010 · 8 comments

How often should you wash your hair? I get a lot of emails from our readers who ask this question. I researched quiet a bit and these are my findings.

First, a personal story. I was born in Eastern Europe, and although I am not certain what “hair washing rules” eastern Europeans adhere to these days, back then, women washed their  hair about once a week. I know what you may be thinking: “Women in Eastern Europe must have grease ball heads”.

On the contrary, my hair showed no evidence of being greasy for at least 5 days from the wash day.

But how?  The trick is, your hair glands adjust to how frequently you wash it. If you wash less frequently, it signals to the body that there is enough beneficial oil(sebum), and that the hair is protected.   The body then adjusts to release oil in smaller amounts over a longer time.

“Sebum” is a beneficial oil that keeps the hair & skin moist and protects it from drying out. According to dermatologists, washing hair daily strips our hair from much needed sebum and leaves hair unprotected.

It takes a willingness to experiment and a dash of will power, but if you wash your hair less frequently, you’ll notice that over a few weeks, it will take longer before the hair looks greasy between washes. (Washing more frequently signals that you are short on sebum and your hair glands respond by producing more oil).

Facts: According to Procter & Gamble, Americans shampoo 4.59 times a week, twice as much as Italians and Spaniards.

So, how often should you wash?
According to the dermatologists you should wash 2 to 3 times per week. Some individual nuances to consider are whether yo have straight or curly hair.  It has been stated that  people with curly hair can go longer without lathering up.   Personally, I wash my hair 3 times a week. It works very well for my naturally wavy, chemically highlighted, heat iron straightened hair.

Myth or Truth: I once heard that washing hair has been invented in the early 1,900 by hair product companies (ahem..Johnson & Johnson) to increase bath products sales.

Truth: According to NPR.org, frequent hair washing craze started with an article published by New York Times on May. 10th, 1908, that advised women to increase hair washing to two times a month instead of once a month shampooing that was customary at the time.

The trend, accelerated by Madison Avenue ads and TV commercials of girls swooshing silky, gorgeous hair after using one or other shampoo product,  catapulted into more and more frequent washes. By the end of the century it became customary to wash hair daily.

Celebrity Reference: According to New York Times, Jessica Simpson washes her hair once a month.   Ken Paves, a celebrity stylist who does Jessica Simpson’s, Eva Longoria’s, and Lady Gaga’s hair, suggests washing hair from once to 2 to 3 times per week, depending on the hair type.   Apparently, Jessica Simpson can get away with washing her hair as infrequently as once a month.   Not sure if I can go that long.

A word of caution: whatever your preference is for washing hair, make sure you use natural shampoos.   Most over the counter shampoos contain parabens and other harmful chemicals that have been linked to cancer.

Recommended natural shampoos: These shampoos are safe, made from natural ingredients and received customer’s raves.

1.Jason Natural Products Shampoo Biotin

2.Kiss My Face Whenever Shampoo for Frequent Use

3.Jason Natural Cosmetics – Hair Thickening Shampoo

4.Moroccan Oil Hair Treatment - last, Ken Paves recommends this amazing Moroccan Oil Hair Treatment to restore moisture & shine for colored, processed or damaged hair.

How often do you wash your hair?  Will you experiment and lather up less frequently?   Do you already use natural shampoo that you love?  Please share in the comment section.

Finding the right sweater dress to wear during the cold months, is equivalent to finding a fashion nirvana.

A sweater dress creates a chic look and keeps you warm.   I also love the benefit of one piece and that a brain strain is not required to find a matching top or bottom.

To satisfy my awe and sweater dresses obsession, here is an array of the best sweater dresses this season.  The dresses are grouped by price categories: Savvy Fashionista, Aspiring Socialite, and Trust Fund Baby.

Savvy Fashionista (Under $100)
1.AGB Dress, Scoopneck Pleated Sweater -$54. This empire waist dress is complimentary in style.  It highlights just the right assets (and by that we mean decolletage), while softly falling over the lower body.  We love the refreshing dash of violet and can’t resist the fab price.

2. Calvin Klein Bell Sleeve Sweater Dress - $98. Classy color (you did hear that grey is the new black, right?), flattering cut, lovely bell sleeves create a perfect sweater dress.   The best part is that it is versatile and will work equally well whether you wear it to the office and to showcase it for drinks and dinner.

3.AK Anne Klein Boatneck Sweater Dress- $98.  Slimming in black and so comfortable, this dress is a perfect palette to accessorize for versatile looks.

Aspiring Socialite ($100 to $300)
1.BCBGMAXAZRIA Cowlneck Sweater Dress – $138

2.BCBGMAXAZRIA Drape Neck Sweater Dress -$248.   Zipper pockets, chic cowl neck front design, perfect length, classy color – what’s not to like?

3.Nanette Lepore ‘Best Friend’ Dress – $248

Trust Fund Baby:
1.Diane von Furstenberg ‘Lovisa’ Sweater Dress -$298

2.Angora Blend Dress -$595

3.Diane von Furstenberg Portis Sweater -$385
Diane von Furstenberg Portis Sweater

Girly, Short, Ruffled and Crochet Sweater Dresses – Pure cute, just because you feel like it!
1.
Design History Puff Sleeve Shift Dress-$138 2.Design History Ruffle Front Sweater Dress -$128
3.Ella Moss ‘Claridge’ Dress -$243

How To Wear A Sweater Dress:
A great thing about the right sweater dress is how versatile it is.   You can create numerous looks, by pairing it with different shoe styles and sheer or opaque leggings.

Casual Grunge:  For an everyday look, wear it with a slouchy boot that has a chunky heel (or an ankle boot) and pair it with thick leggings.

Good Girl: Wear it with feminine cardigan, Mary Jane pumps, and either see-through or opaque pantyhose.

Sexy Vixen: Wear it with high heel boot or pump and beige to add height.  Pair it with beige or see-through black pantyhose to show more skin.

BlakeLivelyModified

As I went out to lunch this Friday in the city of glorious San Francisco, I couldn’t help but notice a burst of fashion and style.  Perhaps it was due to the casual Friday practiced by most offices, or an unusually warm weather, or the Fashion Week, but women sported myriads of colors and trends.

Some women looked incredibly chic in bootcut jeans from past seasons, others looked marvelous mixing trends and classic pieces,  while some who were “trending” head to toe  had something  just a bit off in their outfit.

This made me think about the best strategy to approach trends.  Here it is:

1. Don’t blind trenddon’t buy an item just because it’s “in” (even if it works for your body type).  Unless picked out strategically,  today’s trend is tomorrow’s goodwill donation.

A good example is this season’s sharp shoulders.  They look dramatic on the runway, but have less application in real life.   They may also be hard to pull off with the “non-fashion” majority who do not follow trends.  But the biggest issue with certain styles is that they will leave just as fast as they came.

2. Optimize styles that work for you – trends are a wonderful thing, but if they don’t look good on you, what good would it do to buy that style?   One shoulder blouses are popular this season, but if you are self-conscious about the shape of your upper arms,  it will most likely end up “locked up” in your closet to never see the day light.

A better option would be to look for trends that optimize your strong areas. If you have a divine cleavage, flaunt it in a low cut ruffled top.   If you have long and legs,  wear a pair of leggings that are so popular this season and help elongate even more with a dramatic platform pump.

3. Think global - about your closet.   Don’t buy stand alone items.   Consider how the color and style will mesh with the items you already own.

If you have earthy colors like browns and greens in your wardrobe, buying  a pink coat may be “out of alignment” for your wardrobe.

4. Be Age Appropriate – some trends, regardless of how much you like them and how dashing they are, just shouldn’t be worn by everyone. While I don’t know the exact “cut off” age for a mini skirt, it seems that women in their forties should consider a more age appropriate trend. That is of course unless you look like a dashing 20 year old, in which case I am not sure standard rules apply.  (The key here is to be an objective judge of self).

On the same note, a young girl may look more appropriate in hip above the knee dresses and skirts than a maxi dress.

58438096
Blake, we love you, but please say “No” to sharp shoulders

5.  Spend wisely – when buying new things, identify whether the item you are buying is just trend or a classic in trend’s disguise.   If it is a trend, spend accordingly. Something that is going to be worn for one season, shouldn’t cost you an extreme amount.

If you are paying $250 for a one shoulder dress that you are going to wear twice this season, the cost per wear is $125, which may or may not be too high (depending on  your budget).

On the contrary, if you are buying a trench coat that is well made, and can be worn with many things; this peace will likely last for years to come.   In this case it may make sense to invest in a better quality item for longevity.   For example, a Burberry trench that retails for $500 is expensive, but if you wear it  40 times per year, for the next 4 years, that’s about $3 per wear, which is a lot better investment.

6.  Buy Less - Before doing any shopping, shop your closet.  Who knows, you may still have that 80’s metallic dress that you haven’t worn in years.   Which still fits you.   And looks good.  And is a vintage Versace (gasp).

Chances are you already own most of what you need that only needs a small enhancement.   Then head to the store and choose dramatic accessories to uplift the things you already own.

In summary, trends like anything else should be evaluated on case by case basis, and customized to your situation.

Trends to Buy This Season:

Now that we have the trend shopping strategy down,

here are the trends that are worth investing in, and have staying longevity

Worthy Investments:

1. Trench Coats: Trench coats are an undeniable classic.   Pick quality and wear it for years to come.

1. Juicy Couture – Trench W/ Bows (Black) - $378 2.Marc by Marc Jacobs Fine Twill Trench - $498 3. Thakoon Tulle Edge Trench Coat -$795

What is your trends strategy?  Do you wear things because they are in?  Or do you carefully pick and choose what works for you each season?

From time to time all of us need to replenish our “intimates” collection.   Whether it is to replace a loved, but worn-one-too-many-times bra, to give an eye candy to the special person in your life, or simply to feel empowered by the knowlege of wearing sexy intimates under your clothes; whatever the reason is,  an uplift is needed.

And although putting off buing intimates can work for a while, since what we wear underneath is…well, beneath(most of the time); when a good deal is happening, it is the time to make a move.

Well ladies,  a good deal is here NOW: Bare Necessities is having a huge site wide sale up to 60% off on Sale items.   Regular price items are also 20% off.

Shapewear, Panties, Bras, Sleepwear, Hoisery, Tees - are all on sale.  This is a great time to pick up shapewear by Yummie Tummi(featured on Ophrah), gorgeous bras by La Perla, and sooo sexy panties by Cosabella, and softer than cashmere tees by LinQ.

They are offering free shipping on $100 orders.  The sale runs through Tuesday, June 9th, but procrastinating until the last day of the sale is not recommended, as the good stuff is bound to be gone and in demand sizes are bound to sell out.

Here are our picks in each category:
