According to WWD, Current/Elliott will design a capsule handbag collection for Kate Spade NY. The unlikely collaboration will consist of 6 handbag styles with prices starting at $245 to $1,295. Per Emily Current and Merritt Elliott, the designers behind Current/Elliott brand, the collection is road trip and adventure inspired. The handbags will be available at Kate Spade’s stores and Bloomingdale’s at the end of August, beginning of September.
Although the collection consists of 6 styles, the styles are thoughtfully designed to cover most needs. From a sequin clutch to a convenient cross-body to work duffel to gym bag to passport holder, there seems to be an option for a minimalist lounge hopper to a working woman on the go.
What’s our take? Although we are a little jaded by all the collaborations that have been happening recently, whether it is an affordable collaboration for Target or a high-end, for Opening Ceremony, we are tempted by the tasteful styles that seem to somehow encompass a reminiscent quality from each brand – the laid back CA feel of Current/Elliot and the classy and well-edited pieces from Kate Spade. We also have a soft spot for quality leather, which these bags seem to be made from.
Another positive, the collaboration has a philanthropic element, part of proceeds from sales will be donated to Phase One Foundation, which supports cancer research and awareness.
Having said that, given the limited amount of disposable dollars on hand, we are not entirely convinced we are not entirely convinced that shelling out up to $1,295 on a bag, simply because it is a “capsule collaboration” makes sense.
So we’d like to ask our lovely readers, will you take a leap of faith and allocate our hard earned money to one of these newcomer pieces or invest into an established “it” bag?
