Our world is becoming so streamlined that everything is moving to real-time, from live streaming of pretty much any event to real-time communication via social media. So why not fashion?
The new fashion-forward company Moda Operandi is aiming to do just that. So what is Moda Operandi?
Moda Operandi is an online retailer founded last year by fashion heavy weights Lauren Santo from Vogue and Aslaug Magnusdottir from Gilt Groupe. For an all-star team, Moda Operandi also recently hired a former Neiman Marcus executive Roopal Patel as the company’s fashion director. Taylor Tomasi Hill, previously Style and Accessories Director at Marie Claire, and street-style darling, will serve as the Artistic Director at Moda Operandi.
The site shoots and records looks right off the runway, then runs an online trunk show where members can buy the exact pieces showcased on the runway. Each trunk show lasts for three days.
Moda Operandi members can pre-order looks from the collection by placing a 50 percent deposit on their order. Designers go on to produce the designs ordered through Moda Operandi and send them to the online retailer. Members are notified when their purchases arrive and are charged the remaining 50 percent. Customers receive their order at the start of the season and become first and proud owners of the newly released pieces.
Past and current designers featured on Moda Operandi include Emanuel Ungaro, J. Mendel, Alexander Wang, Nicholas Kirkwood, Rachel Roy, Prabal Gurung, Thakoon, and so much more. The site bridges the gap between in-demand designer clothing and the general public by providing feedback to designers and helping them connect directly to their customers. It also ensures members really receives coveted, current season pieces straight from the runway, and designers have more inventory control and produce pieces that they know they will sell.
Moda Operandi offers a sense of exclusivity with the assurance of quality, current, and on-trend clothing. Additionally, the site features an online magazine, giving members the opportunity to peruse collections based on full-on looks, accompanied by key accessories and editors’ picks. Members can also rest assured they’re getting the most current runway looks, unlike popular sample sale sites, where the collections are from the past seasons.
If there is one downside of Moda Operandi compared to traditional sample sale sites, it’s the lack of price breaks when it comes to quality designer goods. Because the designs are from the new collections and exclusive, they come with the hefty price tag.
Ultimately, it’s the shoppers choice whether or not to pay the price for designer goods and be on the edge of a trend or opt to save and shop last season’s collection from your favorite designer. If one thing’s for sure, though, it’s that Mode Operandi has built on its founders’ fashion knowledge to intertwine the appeal of magazines and current fashions to offer a shopping experience like no other.
