Share Your Shopping Regret and Win $250 from American Express

This contest is now over and the winner is Nora G.  Congratulations!

American Express LogoFashion Hippo partnered with American Express to participate in savvy shopper online shopping program.   This program is intended to educate online shoppers on how they can stay smart online.

As part of the program, American Express will award one of our lucky reader $250 worth merchandise or a gift card.  You’ll have an option to pick a gift card from participating retailers such as Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Zappos, or pick from a selection of merchandise.

We’ve all had a shopping regret, a purchase that didn’t make sense, no matter how great of a deal it was.  I’d like to kick off this contest by sharing mine.

My biggest shopping regret was a rushed purchase.   It was a Botkier butter-soft leather shoulder handbag which retailed for $495, and which I snagged for $200, more than 50% off.   It wasn’t easy and I had to be online at the precise time the sale started and act quick.  I did just that, but in all of the excitement, overlooked there was zero return policy.

When the bag arrived, it was great quality, but it wasn’t the right size, and way too big to compliment my petite figure.   Sadly, since I couldn’t wear it nor return it, at the end of the day, it wasn’t a great deal.   I eventually sold the bag on Ebay, but for less than what I paid for it and after investing the time into creating a listing, paying the fees, and shipping it to the buyer.

In short, I could have easily avoided this, by either researching the sizing better before purchasing the bag.   Or had Amex’s shopper protection benefits to return the bag and just get my money back.

Now it is your turn to share your biggest shopping regret and win $250 in gift card or merchandise from American Express through Membership Rewards Partners.   (This contest is open to US residents only).

What do you have to do?

1. In the comment section, please share your biggest or most entertaining “Shopping Regret”.

The giveaway will run until Dec. 5th, 2011 11:59 PM PST. All entries must be submitted by then.  The winner will be randomly drawn and announced on Dec. 10th (we will be reviewing and nominating the best entry during this window).

The winner must contact us at fh@fashionhippo.com and send us your mailing address.  The AMEX gift card will be traveling to your doorsteps shortly accompanied by one year of  Premium Return Protection enrollment details.

Good Luck!

My biggest online shopping mistake was using my debit card to make a Paypal purchase. My Paypal account was hacked into and someone raided my checking account. You should always use a credit card rather than a debit card because checking accounts aren’t protected. I had to learn that lesson the hard way.

My biggest online shopping mistake was not searching for codes and using cash back before making the purchase during holiday seasons.

My biggest shopping regret was a VERY late night, VERY rushed purchase on Ebay many years ago before I really understood online shopping or Ebay. I was looking for decorations for my daughter’s graduation party (luau theme) and found what I thought was a fabulous deal on a tiki bar – only $100 and it was something we could use on our back deck all summer long for years to come. I ordered it without reading the fine print…. $400 shipping and handling NO REFUNDS. I cried at my stupidity for a week…although we are still enjoying that bar!

My biggest shopping regret is buying a 200 sweater that my puppy ripped a hole in the next day. No fair.

21 Mary Joy Argo November 11, 2011

Worst shopping habit Ive had in the past: buying an item on ebay without first checking the return policy.

My biggest shopping regret to this day was about 22 years ago, yeah! I wanted a pair on red fringe boots so badly that even thought they were a size and a half too small (i dont even know how i managed to stuff my foot in them)I got them anyway. I wore them to school the next day and within hours was in complete agony, but rather than go to the nurse, I endured, by the end of the day I was in so much pain and it took forever to get the boots off :)

My biggest online shopping regret happened three months after my daughter passed away. My son (seven at the time) was looking at bicycles. It was his birthday and I had not been the world’s best mom to him for the past three months since his sister passed away.

He saw this bicycle he said he liked, and I moved heaven and earth (almost) to get it for him. I’m a bit embarrased to say it was almost three hundred dollars…but I was so griefstricken and I thought it’d make him happy. So I found the money and bought it.

It was not practical, comfortable or barely rideable. He was not happy. I was out big bucks and my feelings of guilt and inadequacy as a mother were multiplied, not divided. This bike was shaped like one of those chopper motorcycles and was wobbly and didn’t steer worth a darn! It pretty much sat in the shed for a year. I think he rode it a couple of times before completely giving up.

Never again would I buy a bicycle online.

I bought a very expensive handbag on eBay from a brand new seller, despite that I had reservations. I didn’t listen to my gut and thought “Hey, everybody’s new at some point. It doesn’t mean this person isn’t honest.” Huge mistake. I’ll never give another seller the benefit of the doubt. The purse was authentic. But it was supposed to be brand new and showed up scratched, frayed, had pen marks…and the seller was an unreasonable nightmare. It took forever for me to get eBay to intervene and get my money back. Anyway! Thanks for the opportunity!

The biggest regret I’ve ever made was not buying this gorgeous Free People top. I couldn’t afford it at the time, it was out of my budget. I saw a similar one by a different brand but the quality wasn’t as great. Now I have the same views on shopping as I do with choosing boyfriends – never settle!

33 Mark G. November 12, 2011

My biggest shopping regret was when i purchased a shirt for a friend. I bought it online, but when he got it it was the wrong size and color. I felt horrible. I will never purchase from that website again. I had to return it and get a replacement at the mall.

My biggest shopping regret was not noticing the fine print on a dress I bought online. It looked atrocious on me so I wanted to return it however, it was from the clearance section and apparently they would only give you store credit if it was a clearance item. They also had outrageous shipping costs and I had to pay to ship it back to return it as well. So now I’m stuck with store credit to somewhere that I don’t really want to shop at. So annoying.
